Heat Exchanger Simulation Packages

One does not need to be an expert in the mathematics of complex systems to run a simulation of a heat exchanger design. That is fortunate because there is a need to bring new technologies to bear on new product designs. There is an urgent demand for heat pumps to facilitate electrification. A new generation of refrigeration and AC appliances and systems is needed for F-gas reduction and improved energy efficiency. Refrigerant formulations, heat-exchanger technology and compressor designs are rapidly changing even as the times-to-market are accelerating in a once stodgy industry.

What follows is an overview of several important simulation software tools available to design engineers today. Well-known programs are the Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM) from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); CoilDesigner® from Optimized Thermal Systems (OTS) and the University of Maryland; and HXSim from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the ICA.

HPDM

The U.S. Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory pioneered the Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM) and developed and maintained simulation software for decades. A version of the HPDM can be accessed online to run simulations. Moreover, HPDM software has been licensed to major OEMs and component suppliers in the USA.

CoilDesigner

CoilDesigner® software has been under development by the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE) at the University of Maryland (UMD) since 2001. It is a proprietary software that is typically licensed to OEMs and ‎component suppliers. It is a highly customizable software tool. ICA partnered with several OEMs using CoilDesigner to optimize SDCT heat exchanger designs.

CoilDesigner was used to optimize the condenser for a refrigerator and freezer was optimized for reduced refrigerant charge using SDCT.

Unilab "Coils"

Headquartered in Padova, Italy, Unilab has been providing software for heat exchanger design for 35 years. The Coils Suite is designed to increase speed and accuracy in all phases of the finned pack exchanger proposal, sales and production process. The Coils package includes four integrated modules: (1) the Design Module known as Unilab Coils, for the verification and selection of finned coils; (2) the Sales Module (mcoils); (3) the Production module (Easy); and (4) the new Simulation/Special Applications Module.
